You’ll be surprised how easy this Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu recipe turns out once you follow these simple instructions.
Prep the Casserole Dish and Layer the Base
Spray a 9×13 ceramic casserole dish with nonstick spray to prevent sticking. Layer the rotisserie chicken evenly or boneless skinless chicken breasts, followed by the smoked ham (deli ham or prosciutto works too) and Swiss cheese. Distribute everything so each bite has all three components.
Make the Creamy Garlic-Dijon Sauce
In a medium nonstick saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and add the garlic, stirring for 30 seconds to keep it from burning. I reach for my silicone spatulas for this step because they’re flexible for stirring and strong enough to scrape the sides clean without scratching the pan.
Mix in the salt, black pepper, Dijon, smoked paprika, and lemon juice, then stir in the flour and cook for a minute to remove the raw taste.

Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring often to avoid clumps. Turn the heat to high and cook for about 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens and lightly begins to boil. You’ll know it’s ready when it coats the back of a spoon.
Pour the Sauce Over the Layers
Pour the hot sauce evenly over the chicken, slices of ham, and cheese, making sure it reaches every corner. As it bakes, the sauce seeps through the layers, coating the ham and chicken in a rich, creamy texture.
Prepare the Buttery Breadcrumb Topping
In a small mixing bowl, combine melted butter, breadcrumbs, and Parmesan cheese until evenly coated, then sprinkle over the casserole for a crisp, golden topping in every bite.
For an extra-crispy finish, use panko breadcrumbs, and season them with ½ teaspoon of garlic powder and 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning for added flavor and aroma.

Bake in the Air Fryer
Place the casserole in the air fryer basket and bake at 320°F (160°C) for 25 minutes, until the breadcrumbs are golden and the sauce bubbles around the edges, locking in all delicious moisture. Let it cool for 10 minutes so the sauce can thicken and make it easier to serve. Sprinkle some herbs before serving for a pop of color and freshness. Plate it up and enjoy!
Transport Tip
If I’m bringing this casserole to a potluck or family get-together, I tuck it into my insulated casserole carrier. It’s just the right size for a 9×13 pan, keeps the dish warm, and saves me from wondering if it’ll stay hot along the way.

- ¼ cup parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick spray.
- Layer the chicken, ham, and Swiss cheese in the dish.4-5 cups rotisserie chicken, ½ pound sliced smoked ham, ½ pound swiss cheese
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and add garlic. Stir constantly to avoid burning.4 tablespoons butter, 2 garlic cloves
- Add salt, pepper, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and lemon juice. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.4 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, Salt and pepper
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring frequently to prevent clumps. Increase heat to high and cook until the sauce thickens and boils.3 cups milk
- Pour the sauce over the layered chicken, ham, and cheese.
- In a small bowl, mix the topping ingredients until the butter is evenly distributed over the crumbs. Sprinkle this mixture over the casserole.4 tablespoons melted butter, 1 ¼ cups bread crumbs, ¼ cup parmesan cheese
- Bake in the air fryer at 320ºF (160°C) for 25 minutes. Let the dish cool for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.
Notes
- Use rotisserie chicken for speed: It spares you the trouble of cooking and shredding chicken from scratch, while the rotisserie seasoning brings delicious flavor to the casserole.
- Layer evenly for consistent bites: By spreading the chicken, ham, and cheese evenly, you get the perfect balance in every bite without ending up with scoops that are all chicken or all cheese.
- Whisk the milk in gradually: Adding it gradually while whisking helps prevent lumps and creates a smooth, creamy sauce every time.
- Toast the breadcrumbs if needed: If your air fryer doesn’t quite brown the topping, simply place it under the broiler for a minute or two until it turns perfectly golden and crisp.
- Don’t skip the cooling time: Letting it rest for about 10 minutes after baking gives the sauce time to thicken, making it easier to serve while keeping those layers perfectly intact.
- Flash freeze for better storage: Freeze individual portions on a baking sheet for about an hour before transferring them to containers. This keeps them from sticking together and makes it easier to grab just one serving later.

How to Store Leftovers
Let the casserole cool completely, then cover tightly or divide it into batches and transfer each to an airtight container. It keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, or in the air fryer at 320°F for about 2-3 minutes until warmed through.
For longer storage, wrap leftover Chicken Cordon Bleu casserole in plastic wrap and foil, or freeze portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2 months. Thaw it overnight, stir in a splash of milk if the sauce thickens, and crisp the topping again in the air fryer.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
The casserole is rich and creamy, so I like to serve it with something light and fresh to balance it out. A simple green salad with lemon vinaigrette works perfectly, or roasted green beans and steamed broccoli make great sides. Garlic bread is always a hit too, especially for soaking up any extra sauce on the plate.
For a heartier meal, mashed potatoes or rice pilaf complement the flavors without competing with them. Roasted asparagus or a Caesar salad keeps it on the lighter side while still making it feel like a complete dinner.
